Brushed It : The Starter Kit

September 13, 2015

Brushes don’t make an appearance on the blog as often as they should. They’re more like the stars behind-the-scenes. I took me a while to build up my brush collection, even though to this day I still use my fingers to apply certain products – no shame. It’s easy for beauty-newbies to get overwhelmed with all the brush choices tailored for different purposes. And let’s be honest, sponge applicators that come in compacts and eyeshadow palettes do NOTHING. Let me talk you through the ones I use on daily basis: the basics.

The Sigma F80 Flat Kabuki – if I’m not using this brush to apply foundation, then I’m probably using it to soften the edges of my blush/bronzer/concealer. The Flat Kabuki does a terrific job at buffing in your foundation, blending out harsh edges, and harmonizing your face.

I find myself reaching out for the Sephora PRO Precision Powder 59 – a.k.a the multi-purpose brush – whenever I need to powder up my face, add a bit of bronzer, do a light contour, or sweep blush on top of the apples of my cheeks without being too precise.

For more precision, I would go for the Sigma F35 Tapered Highlighter. I usual need it for highlighting, but sometimes use it to contour in order to achieve that chiselled cheekbones look.

A must-have eye tool is the Sigma Eye Shading E55. A flat shader that can be used to dust or pack shadow on your lids depending on the desired intensity.

The Sigma Tapered Blending E35 is the blending brush to own. What does it do, exactly? Blend. Duh. Its soft bristles harmonize the whole eye look beautifully. Love it!

The E30 Pencil brush, also by Sigma, is the perfect brush for precision. I like to use it when I apply eyeshadow in my inner corner, outer corner, lower lash line, or crease.

Everyone has to own a classic eyeliner brush. My favorite is by Make Up For Ever: the Straight 250. I love the wooden and classic look to it. The brush itself is easy to work with and doesn’t make eyeliner application a living hell.

You can get Sigma brushes here – they’re having a sale!

What are your favorite brushes?
